And In the Afternoon

(Josh Bieber is a student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha .)

I would watch the sprinkler
On the front lawn,
Watch it rotate on its axis,
Left to right and back again
Like a typewriter.

And I would stand just
Beyond the point where
The water fell furthest from the nozzle
Watching the droplets land
At my feet like tiny bombs.

When the time was right,
I would dash into the spray
Raising my hands to my face
As water spattered and shone
In the summer sun.
